Our History, Our Values

As an industry leader in the field of healthcare products and services, the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies have a long history of putting the health and wellness of its employees and customers first, coupled with a deep and long-term commitment to scientific research and innovation. In the 1970s, CEO James E. Burke dedicated himself to building the healthiest workforce in the world by focusing on the health and wellness of his own employees. He believed that a healthy and productive workforce would mean a healthier and more productive organization. For many employees of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies working in 250 operating companies around the world, success has translated into reduced health risk factors, effectively managed healthcare costs, and meaningful strides in positive behavior change.

By looking at the history and practices of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies over the past 125 years, a clear vision of our values emerges: an unwavering commitment to individual health, scientific innovation, successful business practices, community involvement, and overall quality of life.

The launch of Wellness & Prevention, Inc. is a natural step in the evolution of our business principles and efforts. Wellness & Prevention was created to further fulfill our commitment to human-inspired, science-driven integrated solutions dedicated to helping improve the health—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—of each individual we serve.

Our History, Our Values

1880s

Johnson & Johnson is founded by three brothers with a unique vision and passion for making modern medical advances more widely available to the people who need them most, including: promoting the practices of sterile surgery, making first aid kits available to railroad workers, and distributing maternity kits to make childbirth safer for mothers and babies.

1970s

Beginning in the 1970s, CEO James E. Burke makes a commitment to focus on the health and wellness of employees of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies with the goal of building the healthiest workforce in the world.

Mid-2000s

Johnson & Johnson engages two companies to help drive improved health and productivity across the enterprise: HealthMedia, Inc. and the Human Performance Institute, Inc.

2008

Johnson & Johnson acquires HealthMedia® and the Human Performance Institute, Inc. and launches a new company, Wellness & Prevention, Inc., with a Credo-driven commitment to inspire a higher order of health and performance for companies and health plans around the world.

Today

Wellness & Prevention continues to further the mission of promoting individual and population health and thrive as a human-centered, science-driven health and wellness company.
